Canon T2i 550D vs Sony A77 for Noise and Blownout Highlights

www.learningdslrvideo.com I ran two test comparing the Canon T2i 550D for noise and which one could hold the highlights better. In both tests, the cameras are set to a neutral picture style with the contrast all the way down. No lighting optimizer or high light tone priority turned on. In the first test I exposed for the dolls skin, I was the back and I am about two stops under. Both are set at ISO 1600. The reason why I went 1600 is that is high as the Sony A77 will go in movie mode if you can believe that. I picked this doll from my girls collection because of the blue and green colors and I am holding the somewhat red Sony box for the third channel red to see which channel does worse with the noise. Starting with the Sony I see the blue channel is noisy but not some much noise on the green. When we look at the Canon I would say it is about a tie on the blue channel noise. Next when we look at my face and the box I think the Canon is slightly better. When we look at the digital target and you look at the gray and the black, I would say the clear winner is the Canon with noticeably less noise than the Sony A77. In the next test I wanted to see who could hold the blown out highlights better. For some reason I am having a really hard time getting the exposure right for the Sony. Normally when I fill the frame with gray part of the digital target and set the exposure for the Canon I will get perfect exposure on skin tones, but not so with the Sony. Setting Video Exposure On Nikon D5100 (Low Light/Low Noise)

I've found this is the best way to set the exposure for video recording on the D5100; especially in low light situations. Obviously this is no substitute for having full control of manual exposure settings, such as on the Canon T2i/T3i, but it's sufficient enough for most amateurs. The noise in the video would be even less with a suitable video editing program such as Sony Vegas, or Adobe, where you can adjust the rendering settings, contrast, et cetera. All of my videos are edited in WMM V6.0, which is very sub-standard, and creates mediocre quality on my published videos.

Over the past week on FroKnowsPhoto.com I have taken all the JPEG shooters reasons for not shooting RAW and turned it around into reasons why you should be shooting RAW. (There will be a full length article on RAW vs JPEG coming soon) I have done a lot of talking on this matter but now its time to do more showing. What you will see in these two videos are actual samples of RAW + JPEG that were captured at the same time going head to head. There are overexposed and underexposed images as well as the "I got it right in the camera" JPEG vs RAW corrected comparisons. I have uploaded the sample images to my flickr account. In the video I mentioned I would upload the jpeg files as they came out of the camera. For comparison sake the files that I made corrections to to compare against the RAW have been exported from lightroom in full-res. Please enjoy both parts of this series

I happen to own both the indisystem indiSQUARE and the CPM FILM TOOLS DSLR Flyer kit. The indisystem indiSQUARE is one of the lowest priced DSLR rigs I've seen on the market. The entire unit is made out of 6061 aluminum and is very solid. There are 6 mounting holes across the top 2 of which are 1 20 threaded and 4 are 3/8 inch holes with no threads. The indiSQUARE will set you back about $130 + shipping. It's a bit on the heavy side, the handles aren't very durable and it could use a better arranged mounting system, but if your looking to save money this could be a usable option. Before youtube and blogging, I was a very private person. I felt it was time for a change and to get out of my comfort zone. With just a little point and shoot camera I snapped photos of myself and started to play with different lightings, hair, and makeup. I was intrigue by how I can transform myself in just a photo. Each photo was like a story for me. Later on Eric joined forces with me and helped me played out my imagination. He quickly learned how to use our little camera to a DSLR, while I would direct, edit, and process the photos. We do this as a couple's hobby during our free time. Looking back at the photos... I remembered what I did that day, where and when the photos were shot. It brings back great memories. It was a organic process with great learning experiences. I didn't get exposure from other big time publishers, vloggers, or bloggers. It was all trial and error and that's what make me even more proud of myself.
