Trying New Methods with Timelapse and a Slider

www.learningdslrvideo.com Drove up into the mountains for a camping weekend with my youngest daughter and I thought I would share some of the footage from a video I made from our trip and some of the things I tried and learned. I omitted most of the closeups of my daughter. I tried two different methods with the time lapses. The time lapse of us setting up the tent was done on manual mode and the other was on time priority. I used manual mode to see if I could rid it of flicker I have had on previous time lapse but what I got when the clouds came in and out was an over exposed image. I won't try that method again where the light changes so dramatically. When we took the tent down in morning there were no clouds which is typical for a Colorado morning and I tried time priority mode and didn't notice any flicker. I really like time priority because I can drag the shutter and get a nice smooth consist ant look. I used an ISO of 100 and a shutter of half a second. The only thing that changed was the aperture, and I really never noticed the depth of field change. The only way I could pull off half second shutter times is with my Lightcraft Workshop variable ND filter which I really love. As far as I can see, it does a great job of reducing the light entering the camera without adding any color shift. I highly recommend this filter for timelapse and getting shallow DOF in bright conditions. The other thing I tried was, instead of using a wide angle lens mounted on my Konova ...

Konova DSLR Slider Review

www.learningdslrvideo.com Before I start in on the review I want to tell you about my little DIY dolly because before I had it I thought it would be the answer to all my slider needs. Well it wasn't and I don't use it that often, there are two reasons, speed of setup and smooth surfaces. For me I like to move fast from slider move to slider move and using the dolly on a large long board is just not what I call fast for set up time. Also a board does not work well on a board unless it is really smooth, this works best on glass or like a Formica counter top. I tell you this because the Konova slider is much faster to setup, especially in many different configurations. Over the past couple of years a lot of sliders made for DSLR's have come out and a lot of them are really expensive and out of the reach of many amateurs. Basically there are two types of sliders, the less expensive friction sliders that use something smooth like Teflon, and the more expensive roller bearing type that can be very expensive. That is where this Konova slider is different, it has roller bearings and it is around the same price as the friction based sliders.

Konova Slider Montage Film

www.learningdslrvideo.com I've watched other slider montage videos from Luke Nuemann and Patryck Kizny and been just amazed how they look when put to music, so when Konova Photo & Video asked if I would like to review their slider I jumped at the chance since I don't own one. I thought it would be cool to make a slider video of some cool locations around Boulder Colorado. My review of the Konova slider should be done in a few days, but I wanted to first let you see what it is capable of. This was shot on my Canon T2i 550D with mostly the Tokina 11-16mm wide angle lens which works well for slider shots. The BTS are also shot on the T2i 550D. I used Canon's flat picture style with the contrast at -3 and sharpness at 1. I got tried of struggling with the "super flat" custom picture styles. No filters where used on the lenses in this video. My favorite shot is the very first one. My friend David Besnette and I got up before sunrise and captured some awesome light coming up at the NCAR facility in Boulder Colorado. Time Lapse at the End As part of my up coming review I wanted to see if I could create a slider timelapse with the Konova slider which does not have a belt or a motor, I did it the old fashion way - I moved it manually 1/8" each shutter release. A big gust of wind towards the end blew my log over and kind of ruined it, but I think it came out pretty well.
