www.dslrfilmnoob.com I've had the Tascam DR-40 around for awhile now. The lack of independent audio controls for each input channel has kept it from being used on several projects. But recently Tascam was kind enough to update the firmware, adding this feature to the list. You can download the updated firmware 1.10 here: tascam.com With this feature enabled the Tascam DR-40 is now much closer to being a low price competitor to the Zoom h4n. Sure it doesn't have all the features of the h4n, but if you just need a solid field recorder with xlr inputs and volume control the Tascam DR-40 should work fine.
