I need to shoot some upcoming commercial projects with ultra shallow depth of field- only a little bit in focus. So I have started testing a few things out on my kids. You need two things really, big fast lenses and ND filters, or a filter box in front of the lens unit. ( I dont like filter boxes- I think they add weight to the camera rig and get in the way but more on that later) So the lenses have ND filters on them which is kind of like sunglasses for the camera. Combined with some post production to the clip and you can get some mean depth of field and texture... All my clips are shot on HD. Autumn Drift Matsuri 2010, Team Orange undercover

But could you help me out by making a link to my blog: okidokyo.com About the drift matsuri: November 13 and 14, another crazy drift matsuri took place at Ebisu Circuit in Japan. This drifting event is one-of-kind, pretty much anything is allowed, just use your head a little. People buy special "drift missiles" (very cheap drift cars) not having to worry about damaging it. This makes this drift event so special and allows people to really go to the limit and a lot of times over the limit. This is the ultimate way to learn drifting. The atmosphere at this event is just amazing, making it a very worth while event to visit even when not drifting. This is my first time making a video with a DSLR (Canon 550D), still have to get the hang of manual focus, shutter-speed etc etc. But that's what makes it more fun! I like the fluidity of the 24" slider for such a low budget item and I've been impressed with the build quality so far. Watching review of the slider doesn't really give a good impression of the weight, but with a DSLR or heavier camera the IndiSlider handles friction with the rails very well. This allows for nice, fluid reveal shots and slider motions during videos. OVerall it's an excellent product at an excellent price. ~

Nikon D3100 Preview
www.FroKnowsPhoto.com It is a huge day for Nikon Shooters and future DSLR camera owners. The announcement of the D3100 is a sign of things to come from Nikon. This will usher in a whole new crop (no pun intended) of sensors that should produce better quality photos and video. The D3100 will most likely be the first camera out of the gate with a D90 D300s and D700 replacements to follow. Let's look at the main features I am most interested in in the new D3100. The new CMOS sensor is a step forward over the CCD of the D3000. It should produce much better still images at all the different ISO settings. Keep in mind, higher ISO is in no way a replacement for using faster glass (F1.4,1.8 and 2.8 lenses) The new sensor also gives the D3100 the capability of recording full HD 1080 video at 24 frames a second. At lower quality settings you have the option to change the frame rate. The coolest most exciting addition for me is the ability to have continuous Autofocus during video recording. This means you will have an easier time when zooming and tracking a subject to hopefully get your focus right. A side note is that your internal microphone will pick up the sound of the focus motors when recording video. I feel that this will be a very very solid camera for capturing still images. The new sensor will certainly make this a better camera in higher ISO's. I do have a few concerns about this camera and they mostly fall on the video side of things. froknowsphoto.com I really really really wanted to show you this amazing photo I captured of Matisyahu for the photo of the week but I have not even shown him so I cant put it up just yet. I ended up digging threw the archives and came across this shot of my friend "Ed" setting up the mandolin for a Hooters Show. I love the detail of this shot, I love the stadium that no longer exists in the background and I love how Ed pops in black and white. This picture is part of a large photo story which you can see after the break. In the context of the photo story this image helps frame the day from the set up to the break down.

Polaroid Fader ND vs Light Craft workshop Fader ND Mark II - DSLR FILM NOOB

The prices for fader ND filters also cover a wide range from this polaroid filter ($40) on the low end to the Singh-Ray ($350) filters on the higher end. The Light Craft workshop used in this video falls somewhere in the middle, at a price of $125 it is considered by many to be a very good mid range ND filter. But is it really worth it to spend an extra $85 on the Light Craft filter? Or will you be just as happy using a cheaper Fader ND filter? Watch the clips and decide for your self. The difference wasn't nearly as dramatic as I would have expected in video mode. If you're a professional with professional budget you'll probably still want to spend the money and get the best, but if you're on a tight budget, I could see many people being very happy with the performance that the lower end Polaroid filter has to offer. Sigma 30mm 1.4 Review
www.learningdslrvideo.com There are many well known DLSR video bloggers out there at love the Sigma 30mm 1.4, so I wanted to try it myself to see how it preforms. It comes in at a great price to compared to a Canon prime in this focal range. The third party lenses always get a bad rap that they are not as sharp as Canon. I don't have a Canon 30mm 1.4 to compare it to, but I do have a 50mm 1.8 prime. The Canon 50mm 1.8 is only $100 or so and the Sigma is around $450, so I am going to guess by the price and all the great reviews out there that the Sigma has is going to win this match up at 1.8 and at 4.0 sharpness test. If I am shooting at 1.4 I could really careless if the corners are soft, I am mostly interested with sharpness in the center. 30mm is a nice focal range, especially on a crop sensor on the T2i, 7D etc. Also this 30mm seems to have little or no distortion that I can see. Unfortunately there is no Lightroom lens profile yet so I couldn't test the distortion.
