I am a Digital Media Major at UVU. For my Cinematography II class at Utah Valley University (UVU) I was asked to create a 2-3 minute video essay for my final. I shot this with a Canon T2i with the 18-55mm kit lens. These are two ballet majors at UVU. This was shot in one of the dance studios on campus. I shot most of this at 60 frames per second and slowed it down in After Effects.

www.learningdslrvideo.com Before I start shooting with the Canon 5D mark III a lot I wanted to see how it relates to my 2 year old Canon T2i/550D. Several people have been asking me questions if this is something worth the upgrade. Is it really worth 00 more? This comparison only has to do with video, I'm really not talking about stills all that much here. Can you tell the difference? OK, since I know I will get some flack for comparing to two cameras at totally different price ranges, I want you to watch the next two clips from my last corporate video. One was from the T2i with a not so expensive lens and the other with the 5D Mark III with expensive L series glass. To give you more info for your guess I am going to show you before keying the green screen. Green screen makes it hard because you can't look for bokeh. Not easy to tell us it? At the end you can see if your guess was right. In these test, I'm using the neutral picture style, contrast all the way down, sharpness all the way down, and the only thing I have done in post is to add sharpening back in equally for both cameras. I am using the exact same lens, but I move in or out to even out the crop factor. In this shot of me which I made sure I had accurate white balance, it seems like the T2i is slightly warmer. Interesting that on the display the 5D looked to have more saturation with my red shirt, but on my scopes it shows that the T2i has more saturation. Watch part 2 here: www.learningdslrvideo.com s you can see by the video below I finally figured out how to disable or bypass the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) on my Canon T2i 550D while using the Rode VideoMic. (This will work for the Canon 7D as well). I ran across a good video by Mike B at IamTheMikeB.com, he explain how to disable the AGC which I had to give a try. But I couldn't get his hack to work for my Rode Videomic and judging the comments on his video no one else could either. I made 3 trips to Radio Shack but none of these adapters worked. Don't buy the ones I got if you have a Rode VideoMic. I didn't want to get a JuicedLink or a Zoom H4N or anything else that would add time and steps to my DSLR video workflow, I like to keep it cheap and simple. perhaps someday Canon will be nice and provide a firmware update for the AGC, but I didn't want to wait any longer. The problem is Canon designed a poor automatic gain control AGC which would have been better if they left it out of the design all together. What happens is if you talk really loud into the microphone the AGC will bring your level down which eliminates the hiss, but only 1 second later after you stop talking it brings the level all the way up again (along with the hiss). What we want to do is clamp the AGC down and keep it there to keep the hiss away so we can have nice clean audio.
