Achieving Critical Focus With DSLR Cameras

www.learningdslrvideo.com I ran in to something interesting while I was showing my Dad my new T2i 550D DSLR camera. We both took pictures of each other on a tripod and since it was my Dad and wasn't one of my kids I used the manual focus on the lens and then zoomed in all the way using live mode to make sure the reflection of the eye ball was in perfect focus. This was all at f3.2. Then after I took the shot and then play it back on the camera's screen it looked a little soft. But when I imported it in to Adobe Lightroom and zoomed in the eye ball reflection looked perfectly sharp. So the thought occurred to me that what we see in jpg form on the back of the camera which looks soft is because of the picture style applied(sharpening) or just that the jpg is not that good compared to live mode. Has anyone else noticed this? I image this is also the case when you are in video mode.

Hague MMC Steadicam test on the 550D (T2i), GoPro & iphone 4

I've been meaning to do a steadicam test on the Canon 550D (T2i) for a long time but when I got the GoPro and then an iphone I thought it would be a great idea to see if this cheap stabilizer could be used with all of them. I tried it but they didn't really work very well being so light. Then I had an idea the other day that if I added a tripod head that would add the weight and make it much easier to balance out. And it worked. With a few basic adjustments of the bottom weights and playing around sliding the cameras backwards and forwards on the top I was able to balance them quite well as you can see. I was going to go out and shoot some test footage of these three cameras with the Hague but decided I'll leave that for another day. Purchased a DSLR Nikon D3100 camera with 18-55 VR KIT (18-55mm lens included), additional purchase AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm lens. Also bought a companion books, "Nikon D3100 for Dummies." A manual comes with the camera, however for a DSLR novice, the "Dummies" book is recommended. Backyard, 4th of July parade, Washington, DC trip, and assorted photographs used to illustrate the magnificent work produced by this camera set in the "automatic" mode. The camera is 14 megapixels. If you are going to use the video mode of this camera, suggest using a tripod. If going to pan videoing strongly suggest using a fluid-head tripod. 102 year old lens on 5D mkII - VIDEO!!!!

Some moving real world images from the 1908 Wollensak Cine-Velostigmat f5 lens. This is a mix of natural lighting, cine style lighting, hand held, the Kessler Pocket dolley and tripod work. Much of this was shot to see what this lens can do in real conditions, and where its strengths and weaknesses are. What it adds, what it loses is in my opinion what makes this glass unique. This motion test is a precursor to an upcoming film project. enjoy.... www.learningdslrvideo.com I picked up a Digital Calibration Target last week and I have been playing around with it and learning a lot more about my histogram on the back of the camera. I found it helpful in my photography to get the perfect white balance and exposure but for video I am struggling on how best to use it. Using it for photography I shift the exposure to the right of the histogram where I bring my highlights almost to clipping, but with videos I am finding that is not the best approach so I am practicing withe waveform monitor.

Fast, Light, Sharp and Cheap - The Canon 50mm f/1.8 EF II Lens

www.robnunnphoto.com The EF 50mm f belongs in the camera bag of every Canon photographer - it's Canon's cheapest lens, yet this great little prime offers sharp images, great low-light capability and fantastic selective focus options. The 50mm is more like the 35mm equivalent of an 80mm on a crop sensor camera, it's slightly telephoto, so you'll find yourself moving back a little if you're into landscapes - but it's a great portrait focal length.
